NPC (Non-player Character)

Do you ever use NPCs in the games you run? How much of a role do they have? Did the players interact well? Did they help make the story cooler?

We tend to use NPCs for most of our games. They're an interesting way of getting information to the players. Instead of pointing them directly to the "bad guys", they might need to go speak with a "local" to find out some information about the enemy force (i.e. where their camps are located, how many there are, etc.)

I'm trying to get a feel for how common this type of game play is. In my local airsoft scene, it doesn't seem very common, but I'm wondering how often it is used other places.

The other day my team was training, we had a very small turnout, just five of us ... one game I was the lone GI, separated from my unit and wounded but mobile, the others played two local, tribal factions - their goal, control me and take me alive to their respective bases, my mission was to survive and preferably E & E back myself (no running allowed, I had limited ammo, had to occasionally grunt or moan loudly, etc.)
Next time we have more players we'll try to expand it to maybe two GI's, a turn-coat for the other faction in each Tribes team and a secret pro-American or two in each Tribe also.
